FEBRUARY 11, 2010 - PITSBURG
It's been seven days since the Covington Lady Buccs have been on the basketball court for an official game, but it seems like a lifetime considering the weather has hampered the practice schedule.

But Covington showed no signs of rust as it recorded arguably its most impressive victory of the season with a season-high 54-point offensive showing at Franklin Monroe on Thursday.

"I'm very pleased with our performance offensively," said Covington coach Chris Besecker after his team captured a 54-37 win. "Twenty-one points from the free throw line was outstanding. We shot 29 free throws and that shows we were aggressive with the basketball."

The 21-for-29 effort is also proof Covington has improved drastically from the charity stripe as free throw shooting had been a shortcoming for the Lady Buccs earlier in the season.

"We're gradually improving (from the line)," Besecker said. "We've been inconsistent, but lately we've gotten much better from the line."

Covington has also improved at taking care of the basketball as Franklin Monroe applied a ton of pressure with its quick, athletic backcourt.

But the Lady Buccs were able to handle the pressure thanks to the outstanding ball handling and decision making of junior guard Carrie Spurgeon.

"Carrie was the key," said Besecker. "They (Franklin Monroe) like to pressure the ball and force turnovers to get easy baskets in transition. She handled the pressure very well and got us into our half court offense. That was a big key for us tonight."

Because once Covington got into its half court offense Franklin Monroe had a hard time stopping it.

The result was three Lady Buccs scoring in double figures with Shelby Hoblit leading the way with 13 points. Spurgeon knocked down 12 and Julianna Simon scored 11 points.

The balanced scoring also led to seven points for Alyssa Angle, six points for Halley Roberts and five for Shelby Kihm.

"Halley Roberts played an outstanding game," Besecker praised. "Really, all the kids chipped in tonight."

The first half was a foul fest with Covington the beneficiaries as it shot 15 attempts and made 11.

This led to a 10-6 for the Lady Buccs after one quarter and a 24-18 lead at the break.

"The first half was back-and-forth, but we caught a break when ((Monica) Heckman picked up her third foul before the half," Besecker explained of the Franklin Monroe post player who scored 10 of her 11 points in the first half.

Because Covington was able to score at will in the third period - torching the nets for 20 points with Heckman on the bench.

"She (Heckman) is a big presence inside for them and we were able to take advantage of her being on the bench in the third quarter," continued Besecker.

Heckman eventually fouled out with 3:02 left in the game as Covington cruised through the fourth quarter to preserve the 17-point win.

"We still have some loose ends defensive we have to shore up," Besecker said in regards to giving up 37 points. "They did get some uncontested baskets in transition, but overall we were able to take that away from them."

With a three-game winning streak, Besecker feels his team is peaking at the right time.

"The main thing or us is to be tournament ready," he stated. "I feel we had five games this year that we let slip away from us, but right now we are playing better than we have all year."

And the Lady Buccs still have one more contest to test themselves with a trip to New Bremen on Saturday.

"That won't be easy," said Besecker. "They (New Bremen) are young, but they play in a tough conference. They'll be physical with some size and quickness. They'll definitely get after us, so we better be ready to play."

Because momentum is huge heading into the tournament.
