FEBRUARY 27, 2010 - BROOKVILLE
The Covington Lady Buccs went into the sectional tournament the sixth seeded team despite defeating #1 seed Tri-Village, #2 seed Franklin Monroe and #4 seed Bethel during the regular season.

But you won't hear Covington coach Chris Besecker complain one bit about where his team was seeded as he felt it was deserving for his team to come in as the sixth seed.

"We were seeded correctly because we had some losses at the beginning of the season we shouldn't have had," Besecker said. "At that time our free throw shooting cost us."

Fortunately for Besecker, his team has steadily improved from the free throw line and in other aspects of the game and it has resulted into a sectional championship as Covington held on to beat Franklin Monroe 54-51 on Saturday.

It's the Lady Buccs' first sectional title since the 2006-07 season.

"We've steadily improved at the free throw line and defensively throughout the year," said Besecker. "We're still inconsistent, but we've improved."

It was at the free throw line where Covington won the game against Franklin Monroe. The Jets had cut a 16-point deficit with 6:00 to go by outscoring Covington 12-0 run to make the score 46-42 with 1:44 left on the clock.

But Covington made 9 of 10 free throws the rest of the way to preserve the three-point victory.

"They (Franklin Monroe) got some momentum and made some plays at both ends of the floor to get back into the game in the fourth quarter," Besecker explained. "Those were some clutch free throws the kids made down the stretch."

In the final 1:44 of the contest Halley Roberts made two-for-two, Julianna Simon made four-for-four and Carrie Spurgeon made two-for-two at the line.

If not for the free throws Covington would have had its season end after building a comfortable lead in the first half.

"The kids put together a great first quarter," said Besecker. "The first time we played them I felt we didn't do a very good job of boxing out. We challenged the kids and they did a much better job of that in the first half."

Covington prevented Franklin Monroe from getting more than one shot attempt and the Jets struggled finding the bottom of the net in the opening stanza.

The result was a 21-6 Covington lead after one and a 28-16 lead at the half.

And it was the stellar play of post players Shelby Hoblit and Shelby Kihm that sparked Covington.

"We did a good job of getting the ball inside and they (Hoblit and Kihm) made plays," said Besecker. "They (Franklin Monroe) switched to a zone, but we were still able to get inside for good looks."

Covington maintained its advantage in the third quarter for a 42-29 lead and pushed the margin to 46-30 with 6:00 to go in the final frame.

Franklin Monroe caught fire with the 12-point run before Covington was able to fend off its pesky adversaries in the final minutes at the free throw line.

Hoblit led Covington with a game-high 17 points, while Alyssa Angle scored 12 points.

Covington's shooting at the free throw line was the difference, however, as the Lady Buccs made 21 of 28 on the night. Franklin Monroe was 7-for-11 on the evening.

It all leads to a trip to the district tournament next Saturday at 1:00 pm against Fort Loramie at Tipp City High School.

"We scrimmaged them (Fort Loramie), so we know what we're up against," Besecker said. "We'll take our chances. We'll go in there and give them our best shot."

For a number six seed, what more can you ask?
