NOVEMBER 27, 2009 - HOUSTON
The Covington Lady Buccs opened the season looking to get off to a fast start at Houston with a talented and experienced roster - all but two players returning to the lineup from a year ago.

But Houston had other ideas as the Lady Wildcats beat Covington 50-20 in what was an impressive display of basketball for the home team.

Houston beat the Lady Buccs in every way imaginable - on the boards, in the low post, on the perimeter and off the dribble. Covington didn't have an answer for anything the Wildcats threw at them throughout the contest.

"We just got outworked, plain and simple," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "They were more aggressive than us and it showed."

Houston built an 11-4 lead in the opening frame and then cruised to a 14-3 advantage in the second period for a 25-7 halftime lead.

The trend continued in the second half with the Wildcats pulling away for the 30-point win.

"They were running simple motion and we didn't defend it very well," Besecker said. "Our defensive execution was poor and when you play poor defense against a team with some solid players, this (a 50-20 defeat) is what happens."

The three Wildcats who did the most damage were Jaclyn Willoughby, Dannielle Monnier and Emily Ferguson. The trio combined for 43 of Houston's 50 points.

Covington, meanwhile, couldn't get anything going offensively. The Lady Buccs were 9-for-45 on the night from the floor. The leading scoring for the Lady Buccs was sophomore Shelby Kihm with eight points.

"Our biggest issue offensively is we don't have anybody other than Alyssa (Angle) willing to attack with the basketball to create open shots," Besecker explained. "It's a learning process we've been going through where we have to know how to be aggressive, strong and smart with the basketball."

Covington (0-1) looks to regroup against another Shelby County League opponent tonight as Fairlawn comes to town.
