JANUARY 11, 2010 - COVINGTON
By Rob Kiser, Piqua Daily Call

The Covington girls basketball team played two of its best quarters of the season Monday night, opening a 27-20 halftime lead on Lehman.

Then, the scoring problems that have haunted the Buccs all season, return in and eight-point second half as the Lady Cavaliers rallied for a 43-35 victory.

"We did (play well in the first half)," Covington coach Chris Besecker said. "But, Lehman definitely turned it up on defense in the second half."

There were signs of what was to come immediately in the third quarter.

Covington was unable to convert on a fast break layup the would have made it 29-20. Lehman sophomore Lindsey Spearman, a Bucc nemesis all night, ended up getting a layup at the other end to make it 27-22.

"I thought that was a big play," Besecker said. "That is a four-point swing right there."

Still, Covington was even 31-31 going to the fourth quarter and when the Buccs scored the first four points of the quarter, it looked like things might have turned around.

Alyssa Angle scored on a putback and Shelby Hoblit hit two free throws at the 7:10 mark to give Covington a 35-31. But, the Lady Buccs would not score again as Lehman finished the game with 12 straight points.

"Seven minutes without a bucket," Besecker said. "Lehman stepped it up on defense, but we have to do a better job of responding."

The pivotal point in the game came with a little over five minutes remaining. With Covington leading 35-34, Spearman had two steals and layups in a 14 second span to give the Lady Cavaliers a 38-35 lead at 5:02 mark.

"She has such quick hands," Lehman coach Mark Lindeauer said. "We call her the thief."

Covington never really recovered.

A free throw by Christie Freytag gave Lehman a 39-35 lead with 2:01 remaining. Covington held the ball for more than a minute, getting four shots, but could not score.

"I got on the kids pretty good at halftime," Lindeauer said. "I wasn't happy with our energy on defense. Our defense was the difference in the second half."

Freytag and Spearman both made two free throws apiece down the stretch to seal the win.

The game was tied 9-9 after one quarter, before Covington put together one of its best quarters of the seven to go in front at half.

Angle had eight points in the first half, while Hoblit and Kihm each had six.

Spearman kept Lehman in the game, scoring 11 of their 20 points in the opening two quarters, before the Cavaliers took over in the second half.

"Lindsey (Spearman) was really the only one scoring for us in the first half," Lindeauer said. "She is a big-time player for us."

Spearman finished with 20 points, while Brooke Vanover grabbed seven rebounds. Freytag added nine points and five rebounds.

Angle paced Covington with 12 points. Hoblit added eight points and 11 rebounds, while Kihm grabbed seven rebounds.

Lehman was 13 of 35 from the floor for 37 percent and 13 of 17 from the line for 76 percent . Covington was 12 of 44 from the floor for 27 percent , and eight of 11 from the line for 73 percent.

Covington won the battle of the boards 27-23 and both teams had 12 turnovers.

The Lady Buccs will return to action Thursday, hosting National Trail.
