JANUARY 9, 2010 - CASSTOWN
The Lady Vikings of Miami East have never lost a conference contest since joining the Cross County Conference three years ago, so Covington needed to play nearly mistake free to have a chance of capturing a victory on the Viking's home court Saturday.
Which was a large task against a team that lives off of other team's mistakes and Covington played right into the hands of Miami East by turning the ball over 21 times en route to a 46-23 defeat.
"The turnovers aren't so much about Miami East, but who we are right now," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We play teams who will come out and trap us and we don't handle it very well. Until we can prove we can score against teams that come out and trap us we'll continue to see that every night. It's a matter of us getting physically stronger and making better decisions with the basketball."
The frustration began from the outset as Covington could only manage one field goal and two free throws in the first quarter that led to an 11-4 deficit - even after the Lady Buccs held a 4-3 lead early on.
"We had a lot of opportunities early on to build us a lead," Besecker said. "They (Miami East) were struggling offensively, but we didn't take advantage of it. We missed a lot of open shots under the basket."
A pair of baskets by Shelby Kihm and Halley Roberts cut the margin to 11-8 early in the second quarter, but that was a close as Covington could get as Miami East scored eight straight points to take a 19-8 lead at the break.
The trend continued in the second half as Miami East continued to take advantage of Covington turnovers with lay-ups at the other end - several coming from Maddie Linn and Morgan Miller, who each scored a game-high 11 points.
Miami East built a 32-15 lead at the end of the third and cruised to the 23-point win.
Covington struggled shooting from the field as it only converted on 7 of 31 attempts for 23% and 3 of 10 from behind the arc. The Lady Buccs were 6-for-12 from the free throw line for 50%.
"You're not going to win many games shooting like that," said Besecker. "That's the frustrating thing because we had our opportunities early to put points on the board and didn't take advantage of them."
Miami East benefitted from a 7-3 advantage on the offensive boards with a total of 49 shot attempts - an 18-shot advantage over Covington. The Lady Vikings converted on 17 of the 49 shot from the floor, 3 of 14 from behind the arc and 9-for-15 from the free throw line.
Covington did pull down more rebounds (21-18) in the contest, but the 7-3 advantage at the offensive end for Miami East led to 10 second chance points for the Vikings and just two points for the Lady Buccs.
Carrie Spurgeon led the Lady Buccs with 10 points, while Miami East was led by Linn and Miller with 11 points each. Elizabeth Jones dropped in 10 for Miami East.
The defeat drops Covington to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the Cross County Conference.
The Lady Buccs host Lehman on Monday.
