DECEMBER 3, 2009 - COVINGTON
Missed opportunities at the free throw line became Covington's downfall Thursday in a one-point loss to Mississinawa Valley in Cross County Conference action.

The Lady Buccs shot 10-for-19 from the charity stripe in the contest, but made just four of nine attempts in the fourth quarter of the 45-44 defeat.

"We definitely left some points at the line," Covington coach Chris Besecker said. "In close games like this, that's always the first place you look at in hindsight."

As much as the fourth quarter free throw shooting woes hurt the Lady Buccs, the start of the game likely had as much impact. Mississinawa caught fire early by jumping out to a 10-2 lead - forcing a Buccaneer timeout with 4:06 left in the opening frame.

"We got off to a horrible start (to the game)," Besecker said. "A bunch of those points Mississinawa got were second or third shots."

Covington responded with a 9-2 run on a pair of three pointers by Alyssa Angle and Carrie Spurgeon, plus a free throw by Shelby Hoblit and a jumper by Shelby Kihm.

Another trey by Spurgeon tied the score at 14-14 early in the second quarter and a pair of free throws by Hoblit gave Covington its first lead of the game with 3:15 left in the half.

Two more Spurgeon treys before the break kept Covington on top at the half, 24-23.

"I was pleased with how we shot the ball from the perimeter, but we need to get more production out of our inside game," said Besecker. "We only got 10 points out of our post players."

Spurgeon ended the contest with five of Covington's seven treys on the night and a game-high 16 points.

But defensive lapses in the second half prevented Covington from putting a cushion of the scoreboard.

The big lapse came with Covington holding a 33-29 lead late in the third quarter as Mississinawa ran off six straight points before Spurgeon's final three pointer of the game with 6:08 to go.

"We had too many lapses at the defensive end, especially in the fourth quarter," Besecker said. "In a tight ball game like this you can't do that. Every possession counts."

Still, Covington was able to battle down the stretch to give itself a chance to steal the game at the end.

With 12 seconds to go the Lady Buccs put the ball in play for one final possession with the score 45-44. But a perfectly executed offensive set was all for naught as Shelby Kihm's shot came up short.

"Even though we lost, I can't blame our effort," said Besecker. "Our effort was there."

Which Besecker believes will lead to more wins.

"The kids are working hard and they have good attitudes," he continued. "We're going to keep pluggin' away and continue to improve. We'll get more wins this year."

Covington (1-2 overall and 0-1 in the CCC) battles Versailles in a non-league game on Saturday.
