DECEMBER 10, 2009 - PLEASANT HILL
The Covington Lady Buccs walked out of the Newton High School gymnasium a fortunate basketball team Thursday night with a 41-38 victory. That's because Newton had Covington on the ropes thanks to a fourth quarter scoring outburst by Lacy Jackson and horrid free throw shooting by the Lady Buccs.
The visiting Buccaneers held a 27-17 lead late in the third quarter, but a 9-for-28 shooting effort from the free throw line in the second half prevented Covington from putting the game away.
The Lady Buccs finished 10-for-30 from the line on the night.
"That (free throw shooting) cost us a game already and darn near cost us again tonight," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "When teams start knocking down shots like Newton did tonight, they'll keep fouling you until you make them. We didn't make them tonight"
And Jackson took advantage for the Indians.
Held to just three points in the first half and scoreless in the third, the junior torched Covington for 13 fourth quarter points - including two treys and a traditional three-point play.
"We did a nice job defensively on her (Jackson) until the fourth quarter," Besecker said. "She sure lit us up in the fourth though."
Jackson wasn't the only player giving Covington fits as Marina Snipes scored a game-high 17 points - nine of those coming in the first half. That effort by the sophomore kept the game close at the break as Covington held a slim 18-14 lead.
"We had some match-up problems tonight," Besecker explained. "We basically used just one post player at a time because they really don't have any post players. It made for some problems for us defensively."
Still, Covington was able to score when it needed, especially in the final frame.
Snipes had connected on two big treys to cut the margin to 30-25 midway through the fourth, but Aubrye Cain responded with a trey for Covington to push the lead back to eight.
Jackson then scored on a layup and hit on the free throw for the three-point play, but Alyssa Angle followed with six straight points on a layup and two free throws to push the lead back to nine, 37-28.
Jackson canned another three-pointer and then two free throws of her own to once again bring Newton within striking distance, 37-33.
Angle hit two more free throws to push the lead back to six, but Jackson drove in for a layup to make the score 39-35 with under one minute to go.
Newton sent Covington to the free throw line again with 30 seconds and both attempts went off the iron - giving the Indians the result it needed. But Shelby Hoblit snuck in around a Newton player to pull down the rebound and put the ball back in for a 41-35 lead.
After a quick timeout, Jackson canned another trey to close the gap to 41-38 with five second left on the clock.
A quick foul sent Covington to the free throw line again with a chance to seal the game away. Once again, both attempts were off the mark.
Fortunately for Covington a mad scramble for the ball killed the remaining seconds to preserve the victory.
"Give Newton credit, they played hard," Besecker praised. "Steve (Fisher) is doing a great job over there. He's got them playing inspired basketball and with the right attitude. He's also got some nice young players to build on. They'll be a team to be reckoned with."
Jackson and Snipes combined for 33 of Newton's 38 points and knocked down all five of the Indian's treys.
Covington was led by Alyssa Angle's 11 points, but had balanced scoring from six other players.
Newton drops to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the CCC with a road contest at Dixie slated for Saturday.
The victory improves Covington to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the CCC. The Lady Buccs have a week off before hosting Tri-Village next Thursday.
Which will be enough time to work on their free throws.
