JANUARY 21, 2010 - COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs squandered a 23-14 halftime lead by failing to score for nearly 14 minutes of the second half en route to a 31-28 loss to Tri-County North.

"That's the story of the game," said Covington coach Chris Besecker in regards to his team failing to score in the second half until 2:25 was left on the clock. "We had some open looks at the basket, but couldn't get the ball to drop."

Covington opened the contest with two huge treys, one each by Carrie Spurgeon and Julianna Simon. Two free throws by Shelby Hoblit followed for an 8-0 Buccaneer lead.

"We hit two big threes early and they (Tri-County North) went out of their zone to a man-to-man defense," Besecker explained. "They pretty much stayed in the man defense throughout the first half and we were able to take advantage of it."

Covington took advantage of it by pounding the ball inside to Shelby Hoblit, who torched the Panthers for 12 first half points.

Alyssa Angle connected on a jumper and Spurgeon hit on two free throws as Covington was in full control at the break, 23-14.

But the game turned in the third quarter as Tri-County North outscored Covington 11-0 in the frame.

"They went to a trapping zone and we threw the ball up for grabs," said Besecker. "We made a lot of passes that shouldn't have been made."

Covington also failed to do what was so successful in the first half - pound the ball inside to Hoblit.

"You could say their zone took away our inside game, but of course you can't get the ball inside when you throw it away in the middle of the court," Besecker said. "We weren't smart with the basketball, especially in the third quarter."

The Panthers ran off the first five points in the fourth quarter to expend the margin to 30-23 before Covington finally broke the ice with a short jumper by Hoblit with 2:25 left in the game.

Halley Roberts and Alyssa Angle followed with three free throws in four attempts to cut the deficit to 30-28 with under 1:00 to go.

Covington then had a golden opportunity to get the ball back as the Panthers missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the Lady Buccs failed to pulled down the rebound as 29 seconds remained in the contest.

After a Tri-County North timeout, Alyssa Angle stepped in front of the inbounds pass to force a jump ball - giving Covington possession with 25.5 seconds left in the game.

Besecker called a timeout to set up a final attempt to at the least tie the game and the strategy led to an open look from behind the arc with 6.3 seconds left on the clock. But the ball bounced off the end of the rim, falling into the hands of a Panther player, who was immediately fouled with 4.0 left.

The Panthers connected on one of two free throws to push the lead to 31-28, leaving Covington no time for a miracle shot to send the game into overtime.

"It comes down to we didn't execute in the second half," Besecker summarized.

Hoblit led the way for Covington with 14 points.

The Lady Buccs drop to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in the CCC.
