The Covington Lady Buccs look to improve on a 3-18 season a year ago - a season in which the team suffered from the injury bug.
Lost prior to the season was Shelby Hoblit and Renee Otte went down a few games in. The result was an uncharacteristic three-win season, but a season where valuable experience was gained for younger players.
Which makes for some higher expectations this year everyone returns except for the two seniors lost to graduation, Otte and Katie Dickey.
Leading the charge for Covington will be senior Alyssa Angle, who returns at the point. Senior Shelby Hoblit also returns with a clean bill of health after her previously injured knee stood up to the test of a full volleyball season.
Also providing senior leadership for the Lady Buccs will be Kristin Swabb, Erin Waterfall, Carole Bayse and Halley Roberts. Swabb, Bayse and Waterfall are the ultimate team players who come off the bench to provide a spark, while Roberts thrives at the defensive end with hustle and intensity.
Letter winners who also return to the varsity roster are outside threats Carrie Spurgeon (junior) and Julianna Simon (junior), and inside threats Shelby Kihn (junior), Caitlyn Crawford (junior) and Haley Reames (junior).
The Lady Buccs will have plenty of depth as junior Tabith Snider and sophomores Hannah Pond and Aubrye Cain move up to the varsity level.
With the talent and experience returning to the roster Covington looks to climb the standings in the conference against stiff competition. Miami East will once again be the team to beat despite losing a talented senior class, while several other teams will challenge as well.
As always, the non-conference schedule will be tough and prepare the Lady Buccs for the tournament. Covington is once again slated to play Fairlawn, Versailles, Russia, Milton Union, Lehman and New Bremen, while Marion Local has been added to the schedule.
With a season full of challenges the Lady Buccs will look to rely on the in-your-face style of defense Besecker's teams have been known for. But putting the ball in the basket will be the key for a successful season.
