JANUARY 14, 2010 - COVINGTON
After a tight first half in which the Covington girls basketball team led 16-15 at the break, the Lady Buccs outscored National Trail 30-18 in the second half for a 46-33 win Thursday in Cross County Conference action.

But the big break for Covington came before the game even started as National Trail was without their leading scorer.

"We caught a break," Covington coach Chris Besecker said. "Their big girl, who is averaging 16 points a game was out."

Covington took advantage of Trail's lineup adjustments and jumped out to a 12-9 lead after one quarter of play. But the Lady Buccs couldn't find much more offensive success over the remainder of the first half thanks to the outstanding defensive play of the National Trail backcourt.

"Their guards gave us trouble in the first half," Besecker said. "We really struggled to score in the second quarter (four points)."

The Lady Buccs caught fire in the third quarter, outscoring the Blazers 12-7 in the frame to extend the lead to 28-22.

With the lead and the clock on it's side, Covington then put National Trail away in the fourth quarter at the free throw line - an aspect of the game where the Lady Buccs have struggled for much of the year.

"When they sent us to line in the fourth quarter, we made eight of 11," Besecker said. "That was a a positive."

Covington received a balanced scoring effort with three players reaching double figures. Julianna Simon led the way with 12 points, while Carrie Spurgeon scored 11 and Shelby Hoblit added 10.

Three more players found the scoring column as well with Alyssa Angle pouring in a workman-like 7 points, Halley Roberts adding 4 points and Shelby Kihm with 2 points.

The victory improves Covington to 6-8 overall and 4-3 in CCC action.

Covington hosts Tri-County North next Thursday.
