DECEMBER 17, 2009 - COVINGTON
Covington girls basketball has been all about defense under coach Chris Besecker - even when the Lady Buccs had the likes of Michelle Meyer, Andrea Meyer and Ashley Johnson lighting up the scoreboard at the offensive end.

And "DEFENSE" is what allowed Covington to defeat a high-powered Tri-Village 37-31 team Thursday night.

"Absolutely," agreed Covington coach Chris Besecker in regards to the Lady Buccs' defense being the difference in the game. "You look at the first quarter and we're down 10-3, but it's a two-point game at the half because we defended well. We forced them into the shots we wanted them to take."

Those shots Tri-Village took were primarily from the outside as Covington wasn't about to let sophomore standout Kayla Linkous beat them inside the paint.

"She (Linkous) lit us up for 34 points last year," Besecker explained. "We were focused on not letting that happen again and we held her to nine points."

Which was due to the outstanding defensive effort of senior Shelby Hoblit.

"Having Hobs (Hoblit) in the lineup this year was the difference," Besecker said of his senior post player who missed all of last year with a knee injury. "She was physical with her (Linkous) and never let her get into a flow offensively. Shelby played a whale of a game defensively tonight."

Another Shelby on the Covington roster played a whale of a game at the offensive end - Shelby Kihm. The sophomore led all scorers with a game-high 12 points, including 6-for-7 from the free throw line.

"Shelby Kihm was a difference maker," Besecker praised. "She was strong inside taking the ball to the basket and she came up big from the free throw line. We got big games out of our post players tonight."

With Covington's stingy defense holding Tri-Village in check, the Lady Buccs started to heat up the nets in the second half at the offensive end.

Whether it was a three-point shot by junior Carrie Spurgeon or a well executed back door pass for a lay-up, shots fell with regularity as Covington scored 15 points in the third to take a 27-24 lead.

"It was nice to see some shots rattle in for a change," Besecker said. "We've had our share of games where shots rattled in and out, but tonight we had some big shots fall. Carrie (Spurgeon) hit a couple of big threes and we got our post game going in the second half. That was huge."

With Tri-Village getting desperate, the Lady Buccs had their chances to seal the game at the free throw line in the fourth quarter. But only four of the 14 attempts from the charity stripe went down, which kept Tri-Village in the game.

"We have to improve at the free throw line," said Besecker. "If we make half of those we ice the game. Instead, we let them hang around until the end."

Still, with Covington's defense forcing Tri-Village to take low percentage shots and the offense taking advantage of defensive breakdowns, the Lady Buccs managed to keep the visitors at bay with a 10-9 advantage in the final frame to preserve the 37-31 win.

"Like I told the girls after the game, we'll be in a lot of games like this where every possession counts," said Besecker. "We're not an offensive juggernaut where we'll rip off 60-70 points a game. We have to defend to contend. That's our style of play."

Covington defended tonight and the result was a win.
