COVINGTON — Covington girls basketball coach Chris Besecker knows the Lady Buccs took a big step forward last year, going 12-12.

But, he also knows they still have a ways to go.

“We have had great basketball teams here before,” Besecker said. “We are not there right now, but are working towards that. A lot of has to do with kids understanding just how hard you need to work.

“The improvement last year had to do with just having healthy bodies (after being hard hit by injuries two years ago). I thought our biggest problem last year was getting a consistent effort (for four quarters).”

Covington must repalce three starters lost to graduation in Alyssa Angle, Shelby Hoblit and Halley Roberts.

But, the Lady Buccs return some talented players as well.

Senior Carrie Spurgeon (5-6) will be at one guard spot, while juniors Julianna Simon (6-1) and Hannah Pond (5-4) will be at the wings.

Spurgeon led a balanced attack last year with 7.8 points per game, while Simon scored 6.3.

“There is no question Carrie (Spurgeon) and Julianna (Simon) are two players who are very capable of scoring points for us,” Besecker said.

In the paint will be junior posts will be 6-1 Shelby Kihm and 5-11 Haley Reames. Kihm averaged 5.4 points per game a year ago.

“Shelby (Kihm) can be a force inside when she is on,” This is one of the tallest teams we have had. But, that doesn’t always win basketball games.”

Three key players off the bench will 6-1 junior post Caitlyn Crawford, 5-5 senior guard Aubrye Cain and 5-7 senior wing Tabitha Snider. Rounding out the roster are 5-3 junior Shaina Grilliot and 5-5 sophomore Heidi Snipes.

“One of the things that has really hurt us is taking care of the basketball,” Besecker said. “And so far, that hasn’t changed. We have to do a better job taking care of the ball.”

Besecker believes the team has the ability to do that.

“I think it is just a matter of our guards understanding that they have two hands and they need to use both of them,” he said.

Another thing Besecker wants to see is better defense from his team.

“I didn’t feel like we played very good defense last year,” he said. “Again, that is one of those things where the girls need to understand they need to dig deep. They need to understand if we don’t play good defense, we are not going to win.”

Besecker there is no question about the top two teams in the CCC.

“I think Miami East and Tri-Village are ahead of everyone else,” he said. “After that, it is anybody’s guess.”

The Lady Buccs will again be challenged in the non-conference schedule with the likes of Versailles, Russia, Lehman, Jackson Center and Marion Local, to name a few.

“It is the same teams,” Besecker said. “That is the theory, that playing those types of teams makes you better. When one team is clearly better, I don’t think anybody is getting better from that.”

But, Besecker does expect the Lady Buccs to continue their improvement.
