FEBRUARY 6, 2012 - COVINGTON At this point in the season it's blatantly obvious what teams will do when facing the Covington Lady Buccs - focus on shutting down Shelby Kihm and Julianna Simon.
That's the strategy Bethel used on Thursday as it applied a smothering triangle-and-two defense on Covington's two leading scorers.
And the strategy worked as both players struggled throughout the first half, combining to score only seven points as Covington managed a slim 16-10 lead at the break.
"They were in a triangle-and-two on Shelby and Julianna and there wasn't a lot of room to work," Covington coach Chris Besecker explained. "We needed someone else to step up."
That someone else was junior guard Heidi Snipes, who scored seven crucial points in the first half and ended up with 11 points on the game.
"We needed that," Besecker said of Snipes' effort. "She hit some big shots for us."
Another big basket followed for Snipes late in the third quarter and suddenly things began opened up for Kihm and Snipes in the fourth quarter. The duo combined for 16 of the 18 points in the final frame as Covington pulled away for the 42-23 win.
Simon led all players with 16 points, while Kihm dropped in 13 hard earned points.
Covington also had one if its better nights taking care of the basketball as it only committed eight turnovers.
"When you are under ten turnovers for a game, that's pretty good," said Besecker. "We had a couple traveling calls and threw the ball away a few times, but other than that we took care of the ball pretty good."
The victory improves Covington's record to 11-8 overall and 8-3 in the CCC, while Bethel drops to 2-17 on the season and 1-10 in the league.
The Lady Buccs host Bradford on Thursday for "Senior Night".
