NOVEMBER 26, 2011 - COVINGTON
Just 24 hours from a frustrating effort against Houston, the Covington Lady Buccs looked like a totally different team in the home opener against Fairlawn - cruising to a 57-28 win.

"It's like night and day from last night," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "I thought overall we played more aggressive in all phases of the game - defensively, on the boards and taking the ball to the basket."

Covington built a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but found some adversity as leading scorer and floor leader Julianna Simon picked up her second foul.

Shortly thereafter Shelby Kihm, the Lady Buccs' most potent post player, joined Simon on the bench with her second foul.

And Fairlawn took advantage by outscoring Covington 14-9 in the second frame to cut the margin to 25-20 at the break.

"Our second quarter wasn't very good," Besecker said. "We had a 20-9 lead and had a chance to put them away early, but we didn't do it. Julianna and Shelby had some foul trouble and we didn't react very well."

Simon got Covington rolling in the second half by scoring ten of her game-high 27 points in the frame. The 16-6 scoring onslaught in the third pushed Covington's lead to 41-26 with one quarter to play.

Frustration set in on the visiting team was two players fouled out in the fourth quarter and Covington kept rolling at the offensive end.

By the time the final buzzer went off the Lady Buccs had outscored Fairlawn 16-2 in the fourth quarter for the 57-28 win.

And it wasn't just Simon's 27 points and Shelby Kihm's 13 points that got the job done.

"I thought some of the other kids make plays at both ends of the floor," said Besecker. "We looked stronger tonight than we did last night."

Covington received 17 points from its supporting cast as freshman Cassidy Cain scored six points, Haley Reames and Caitlyn Crawford each had four points and bench players Jessie Shilt and Heidi Snipes combined for three points.

"That's what we need," Besecker agreed in regards to balanced scoring. "Our chances are better if we can make teams pay for focusing on Kihm and Simon."

One thing Covington didn't do well was convert at the free throw line as it only converted on 15 of 30 attempts.

"We didn't shoot free throws very well," said Besecker. "That's something we need to work on."

The victory evens Covington's record at 1-1 with a trip to Franklin Monroe awaiting on Thursday in the CCC opener.
