DECEMBER 1, 2011 - PITSBURG
Sometimes it's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that determines success.

For the Covington Lady Buccs, there wasn't too much success to get excited about on Thursday, even after a 34-25 win over Franklin Monroe.

"We didn't play well from the neck up tonight," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "It was our worst performance so far this year. We actually played better against Houston."

Besecker's frustration can be attributed to the number of turnovers his team had and the fact that his team was out hustled by a much smaller team.

"We didn't handle the pressure well," he said. "We had way too many turnovers and when you turn the ball over it gives them more opportunities at the other end. That was a problem for us tonight."

Covington opened the contest by taking a 5-0 lead on a trey by Cassidy Cain and a basket by Shelby Kihm, but went scoreless over the remainder of the opening frame.

And Franklin Monroe scored seven unanswered points, five in the final minute of the first quarter to take a 7-5 lead.

The Lady Buccs appeared to catch fire midway through the second quarter, scoring 13 points to take an 18-13 lead at the break.

Covington then opened the second half with a pair of baskets to take a 22-13 lead, but once again went scoreless over the remainder of the third frame as Franklin Monroe cut the margin to 22-18.

"It was an inconsistent effort," Besecker explained. "It wasn't just one or two girls. It was everybody."

Fortunately for Covington, its size took a toll on Frankin Monroe and the Lady Buccs were able to put the game away in the fourth quarter - outscoring the Jets 11-8 in the frame.

Shelby Kihm led Covington with 12 points, while Julianna Simon contributed with 11 points.

Halley Gray scored a game-high 15 points for Franklin Monroe.

The victory pushes Covington's record to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the CCC, while Franklin Monroe drops to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.

The Lady Buccs look to improve on Saturday at Versailles.
