NOVEMBER 25, 2011 - HOUSTON
The Covington Lady Buccs couldn't get any consistency going at the offensive end in the season opener at Houston on Friday and the result was a frustrating 34-26 defeat.

"Our shooting wasn't very good, that's for sure," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We have to look to shoot more, create some shots. We can't rely strictly on Shelby (Kihm) and Julianna (Simon)."

Simon and Kihm were the Covington offense as they accounted for all but one of the 26 Covington points in the contest. Simon tallied a game-high 16 points, while Kihm had nine points.

"We need other kids to step up," Besecker said. "We know teams will focus on Shelby and Julianna, so we need other kids willing to take shots and look to even create some shots."

Much of Covington's offensive struggles were due to the aggressive defense applied by Houston. Particularly in the fourth quarter, Covington had difficulty handling the basketball against the pressure.

"Reister and Elliott were very good defensively, sitting in the passing lanes and creating turnovers," Besecker explained. "Our girls didn't do a very good job of paying attention to where the defenders were."

Even with the offensive struggles, Covington's own defense kept the game within striking distance with the score at 26-23 with 4:00 left in the game.

But the Lady Buccs suffered a big blow as Shelby Kihm went to the bench after hitting the back of her head while falling to the floor.

And Houston took advantage by outscoring Covington 8-3 the rest of the way to preserve he win on its home floor.

"We just didn't play well tonight," said Besecker. "We have to play better tomorrow night if we want to get a win."

Covington hosts Fairlawn tomorrow in the home opener.
