JANUARY 2, 2012 - WEST MILTON
People who like to see 50 or 60 points a game will look at the 36-24 victory the Covington Lady Buccs had over Milton Union and think it had to be a poor offensive showing by both teams.
For Covington, it was anything but a poor showing at the offensive end as the Lady Buccs executed the offense with precision and patience more often than not against a gritty Milton defense.
"We executed well at the offensive end," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We were patient for the most part and didn't force shots. Overall, it was a good night at the offensive end because we took what their defense gave us."
Milton's strategy was obvious - slow down Julianna Simon and Shelby Kihm, Covington's two leading offensive threats.
The strategy was rather successful early, but Covington made the adjustments as other players hit on some big shots.
"They played a box-and-one on Julianna (Simon) and they helped down on Shelby (Kihm) when we got the ball inside," Besecker said. "Heidi (Snipes) hit one two big threes early on to give us a lead and we were able to maintain it throughout."
Hannah Pond, Caitlyn Crawford and Haley Reames also contributed with big buckets in the contest, while Simon and Kihm scored their points the hard way - primarily off of offensive rebounds or at the free throw line.
Only twice did Simon find open looks at the basket from behind the arc and she drilled one of them.
"Like everybody else, Julianna didn't force anything," Besecker praised. "She knew her shots weren't going to come easy, so she stayed patient and took high percentage shots."
Covington surged to a 10-5 lead in the first off of the two treys by Heidi Snipes and then extended the lead to 18-12 at the break with big bucket by Crawford and Pond keeping Milton at bay.
The margin remained at six points heading into the fourth quarter as Covington's size inside made it difficult for Milton to get any open looks inside the paint.
"Our size was a plus when we moved our feet," Besecker said. "When we kept our feet moving at the defensive end it made it very difficult for them to get open looks."
Milton's frustration began to show as Covington found itself at the free throw line over much of the fourth quarter - outscoring the home team 13-7 in the final frame.
"We had kids step up at both ends of the floor," said Besecker. "It was good to have a solid performance coming off the holiday break."
Shelby Kihm led Covington with a game-high 16 points, while Simon knocked down 8 points.
The victory moves Covington to 6-3 on the season, while Milton drops to 4-5.
