DECEMBER 8, 2011 - COVINGTON
Covington coach Chris Besecker knew his team was in for a tussle against Mississinawa Valley due to the fact that the visiting Blackhawks returned all but two players from a team that handed the Lady Buccs two defeats a year ago.
"I knew this would be a tight game and it was," said Besecker after his team gutted out a 50-37 win. "They beat us by two twice last year and they have some quality kids back."
And one of those kids for Mississinawa Valley was one of the best defenders Covington has seen so far this year, Maddie Murphy. Losing Murphy early in the fourth quarter due to injury led to a 13-0 run by Covington.
"When Murphy went down, that really hurt them," Besecker said. "She was playing as well as anybody on the floor tonight. She picked our pockets several times there in the third quarter and got them back into the game."
Covington put together a consistent first half and led 22-15 at the break, but Mississinawa Valley outscored the Lady Buccs 19-15 in the third quarter to cut the margin to 37-34.
"We got off to a good start in the first half and made some big shots," Besecker explained. "But we didn't take care of the ball very well to start the second half and they had a nice run. Murphy had a lot to do with that though. She forced some turnovers and they got some easy baskets in transition."
With Mississinawa's shut-down defender being attended to by the trainer, Covington caught fire down the stretch, scoring 13 straight points for a 50-34 lead.
It wasn't until the final minute before Mississinawa Valley scored on a traditional three-point play, but by then the outcome of the game was decided.
"We defended well down the stretch," Besecker said. "We hit some big shots as well. Overall, we shot the ball pretty well tonight."
Julianna Simon lead all players with a game-high 23 points, 12 of them coming on four huge treys.
Shelby Kihm came off the bench to score 13 points, while freshman Cassidy Cain scored seven points.
The victory improves Covington's record to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the CCC, while Mississinawa Valley drops to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in the league.
Covington has a week to work on its game before traveling to rival Newton next Thursday in another CCC showdown.
Covington dropped the junior varsity contest 45-40.
