JANUARY 30, 2012 - RUSSIA
It was a game that was there for the taking for the Lady Buccs, but they just couldn't put the ball in the basket when they needed and it cost Covington in a 36-30 defeat at the hands of Russia.
"We missed a lot shots from point-blank range," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "Shots right under the basket weren't falling tonight. That killed us."
Russia was having the same issues, at least in the first quarter. The Raiders only converted on one field goal in the entire frame.
But Covington didn't take advantage of the opportunity, misfiring on several scoring opportunities inside the paint and failing to convert on open shots behind the three-point line.
The result was a 5-2 Covington lead after one and all indications of an ugly game.
"We had a good opportunity to put some distance between us on the scoreboard in the first half," Besecker said. "But we couldn't hit our shots."
Russia defense had a lot to do with that.
"They did a good job defensively on Shelby (Kihm) and Julianna (Simon)," Besecker continued. "They are a good defensive team and you know you'll get that kind of effort when you play Russia."
Russia picked up the offensive effort in the second quarter, outscoring Covington 13-9 in the frame to take a 15-14 lead at the break.
"As poorly as we shot the ball, we were still in it at the half," said Besecker. "But the third quarter killed us."
That's because Covington only scored two points in the frame as Russia pushed its lead to 25-16 with one quarter to play.
"We had problems scoring against their zone," Besecker explained. "We have to find a way to attack the zone with dribble penetration and right now we're struggling with that."
Covington put together a valiant comeback in the final frame, but simply ran out of time as Russia converted on its free throws down the stretch to seal the 36-30 win.
The Lady Buccs were led in scoring by Shelby Kihm with a game-high 15 points and 12 points from Julianna Simon. The duo scored all but three of Covington's points in the contest.
Meanwhile, Russia had seven players contribute in the box score.
"That's the difference," said Besecker in regards to balance in scoring.
Covington drops to 8-8 overall, while Russia improves to 10-6.
The Lady Buccs are back in action on Thursday at Arcanum.
