JANUARY 19, 2012 - COVINGTON
Tri-County North went into Thursday's matchup with Covington shorthanded due to an injury to its best post player and Shelby Kihm had a field day in scoring a game-high 28 points to lead the Lady Buccs to a 54-34 victory.
"They didn't have an answer for Shelby," said Covington coach Chris Besecker. "With their top post player out, Shelby basically took over."
And the rest of the team did what it needed to do - get the ball inside.
"First off, we handled the basketball better and did a nice job of getting the ball inside," Besecker explained. "Then it was basically a case of Shelby using her size to her advantage."
Covington advantage inside the paint was evident from the outset as the home team built a 14-6 lead after one and extended the lead to 31-18 at the break.
But Tri-County North showed grit by hanging with Covington in the third quarter, only being outscored 10-7 in the frame.
"The Schriever girl is a nice player and she scored 17 points for them," Besecker praised. "She hit some big shots."
Still, it was too much of Shelby Kihm as Covington put the game away in the fourth quarter to improve to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the CCC.
Kihm led all players with 28 points, while Julianna Simon had an effective scoring night with 13 points.
Not to go unnoticed, Heidi Snipes dropped in eight points in what was a very impressive showing by Covington's junior guard.
Things get tougher for Covington on Saturday as state ranked Marion Local comes to town.
"Yeah, we'll have to be ready to play," Besecker confirmed. "They have a strong program and it will be a good measuring stick for us."
