JANUARY 13, 2012 - COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs found a difficult tim dealing with National Trail's quickness and aggression and the result was a frustrating 37-25 defeat on the home floor.

"They are the quickest team we've played this year," said Covington coach Chris Besecker of National Trail.
"They're quick and aggressive and we didn't handle it very well."

National Trail's advantage in quickness was evident from the outset as the Blazer applied smothering pressure on the ball from the opening tip - forcing Covington into turnover after turnover.

And the result was an 11-4 Blazer lead at the end of the first and a 19-5 lead late in the second quarter before a Simon trey and two free throws by Shelby Kihm cut the deficit to 19-10 at the break.

"It's the same story with us in regards to our inability to handle pressure," Besecker said. "When we face great defensive teams that bring pressure, we struggle. Until we can learn to handle the pressure and make smarter decisions with the basketball we'll continue to struggle."

Covington started handling the pressure better in the third quarter and found a way to get the ball inside to Shelby Kihm. And the senior post player took advantage with three buckets in the frame as Covington cut the deficit to 22-19 with under 3:00 to go in the third.

But National Trail weathered the storm and scored the final five points on the quarter to push its margin to 27-19 with one quarter to play.

"Against good defensive teams like that you have to set solid screens and make good cuts," Besecker explained. "And we didn't do any of that. We didn't execute very well at the offensive end."

Smelling victory, National Trail picked up the defensive pressure even more in the final quarter, holding Covington to just six points the rest of the way for a twelve-point win.

"All the credit goes to them," Besecker said. "They didn't do anything fancy. They played us with a straight up man defense and had their best defender on Julianna (Simon). We didn't execute well against it and weren't quick enough to beat them off the dribble in one-on-one situations."

Shelby Kihm accounted for all but nine of the Lady Buccs' points with a game-high 16, which is proof of Covington's struggles against the man-to-man defense.

And the inability to execute at the offensive end overshadowed what was overall a solid defensive effort by Covington.

"Defensively we did a pretty nice job, especially considering how quick and athletic they were," said Besecker. "Giving up 37 points is good enough to win a ball game. The problem was we couldn't score."

The loss drops Covington to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the CCC, while National Trail improves to 10-5 on the season and 8-1 in the CCC.

Covington looks to end a two-game skid next Thursday as Tri-County North comes to town.
