FEBRUARY 6, 2014 - ARCANUM
The Covington Lady Buccs have had their fair share of heartbreak throughout the season as six of their ten losses have been by five points or less - the latest heartbreak coming at Arcanum on a shot at the buzzer by the Lady Trojans.

"To suffer another heartbreaker is tough to swallow," said a dejected Covington coach Craig Maschino. "It's tough because of how hard the girls played just to dig ourselves out of an early hole. The girls fought hard tonight and to see it end the way it did was hard."

Covington came out sleepwalking in the first quarter, while Arcanum was amped up from the pre-game festivities where it honored its two seniors.

The result was an 18-5 Trojan lead at the end of the opening frame.

"This is the second game in a row where we were sluggish to start the game," said Maschino. "Arcanum just outplayed us. We gave up a lot of dribble penetration early and that's out of character for us. They got some big offensive rebounds early and pretty much took it to us in the first quarter."

The Trojans pushed their lead to 17 points midway through the second quarter, but Covington finally found some fire and cut the deficit to 28-16 at the break.

Covington then outscored Arcanum 17-10 in the third quarter to close the gap to five points with one quarter to play.

And it was the defensive pressure applied by the Lady Buccs that turned the momentum.

"We turned it up at the defensive end in the second half," Maschino explained. "Heidi Cron especially. She had four steals in the second half and that's what got us going."

Arcanum regrouped and pushed its lead back to nine points early in the fourth, but Covington continued to scratch and claw its way back - eventually cutting the deficit to 42-41 with 50 seconds left.

The Trojans then pushed its lead back to three points on a pair of free throws by Alexis Abner with 40 seconds left, setting the stage for a thrilling finish.

In an attempt to tie the score, Covington had three shot opportunities from behind the arc on the final possession. And on the third attempt Jessie Crowell was fouled with 2.5 seconds left.

The sophomore then made good on all three attempts from the line to tie the score at 44-44 as Arcanum took one final timeout to set up a miracle finish.

And what a miracle it was as Brittany Kinney tossed the ball to Abby Ross at mid court. Ross took two dribbles and tossed a dart down the left side of the court to freshman Stevie Johnting, who tossed in a runner at the buzzer.

"Give Arcanum credit, they made the play they needed at the end," praised Maschino. "For us, it hurts and I know the girls are disappointed, but we'll bounce back. Even though this is a loss in the books, we can use this as a confidence builder going forward."

Covington shot 39% from the floor (18-46), 25% from behind the arc (2-8) and 86% from the free throw line (6-7).

Arcanum was 20-36 from the floor (56%), 2-8 from three-point range (25%) and 4-5 from the line (80%).

The Trojans held a 24-19 edge in rebounding, but Covington pulled down 12 offensive rebounds to nine for Arcanum.

Covington also forced 24 Arcanum turnovers, while committing 14 of its own.

The Lady Buccs look to put this heartbreak behind them and rebound on Saturday at Russia.
