COVINGTON - Less than two ticks on the clock. That's all Bradford needed to stun rival Covington on Tuesday in a hotly contest girls basketball game at Covington High School.

With 1.9 seconds left - after Cassidy Cain converted on two straight free throws to give Covington a 36-35 lead - Bradford senior Michayla Barga had the ball in her hands on the baseline. Barga surveyed the floor - looking to her right and then the left - and tossed a dart three quarters the way down the floor to senior teammate Brooke Dunlevy.

Streaking down the court, Dunlevy caught the ball in stride and launched a 30-foot runner that banked in at the buzzer to lift Bradford to a 38-36 win - a win that sparked a spontaneous celebration in the middle of the floor by the Bradford faithful.

The final seconds of the game were a fitting conclusion to a contest full of excitement from start to finish as both teams battled back and forth, taking turns capturing the momentum, only to see it swing to the other side of the court in a blink of an eye.

Bradford opened the contest by taking a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 19-13 with a huge trey by Barga to force a Covington timeout with 3:49 left in the half.

Covington then closed out the half on an 8-0 run as Cain connected on a jumper and a trey, Heidi Cron scored on a layup and freshman Lexie Long hit on a free throw.

The momentum swung immediately in the second half as Barger hit a jumper and a trey on consecutive possessions and then Gabby Fair hit on a free throw to give Bradford a 25-21 lead.

The Lady Buccs responded with a pair of lay-ups by Morgan McReynolds and Heidi Cron followed by a trey by Arianna Richards to give Covington a 28-25 lead with one quarter to play.

And what a final quarter it was as Brooke Brower started things off by converting a steal into a layup.

After a Morgan McReynolds jumper pushed Covington's lead back to three points (30-27), Haley Patty timed a Covington pass and scored on a layup at the other end. Unfortunately, seconds later Patty picked up two quick fouls to foul out of the contest with 3:22 left in the game.

Heidi Cron converted both free throws to push the Covington lead to 32-29, but Michayla Barga turned the tide once again by taking a steal coast-to-coast for a layup and then drilling her third trey of the game to give Bradford a 34-32 lead with 50 seconds left in the game.

Forced to foul, Covington sent Dunlevy to the free throw line and the senior converted one of two to push the Bradford lead to 35-32 with 24 seconds left.

Cassidy Cain then attempted a three and was fouled after pulling down her own rebound with 8.8 seconds left. The junior, who ended with scoring 13 points in the contest, connected on both free throws to close the gap to 35-34.

Once again Covington fouled on the inbounds pass and Dunlevy missed on the front end of the one-and-one. Cain pulled down the rebound and went the length of the floor with a drive to the basket.

Cain was fouled and converted on both free throws to give Covington a 36-34 lead with just 1.9 seconds left on the clock.

Which was all the time Barga and Dunlevy needed to pull victory out of the jaws of defeat with their heroics - heroics worthy of celebrating.
