FEBRUARY 18, 2014 - BROOKVILLE
The Covington Lady Buccs had little trouble advancing to the sectional final with a 50-16 win over Dayton Christian (3-19) on Tuesday at Brookville High School.

And it was the Lady Bucc Defense that made life difficult for Dayton Christian as Covington held the Lady Warriors without a field goal in the first and third quarters.

"It was about limiting their shot opportunities," said Covington coach Craig Maschino. "When we scouted them we noticed they take a lot of shots, about 60 to 80 a game. We limited them to 40 tonight."

Despite a sluggish first half offensively for Covington, the Lady Buccs still managed to build a 20-6 lead at the break.

"In the first half we weren't set to shoot," Maqschino explained. "That's why our shots weren't falling and thats an adjustment we talked about at halftime."

Behind some big shots from long range by Arianna Richards, Covington put the game away by outscoring Dayton 20-1 in the third quarter.

"I think what got us going in the second half was our dribble penetration," said Machino. "That opened up our outside game and Arianna knocked down big shots."

From there Covington emptied its bench and cruised to the 34-point win.

In all, Covington tallied eight treys on the night, four coming from Richards, who scored a game-high 19 points. Jessie Crowell scored 11 points and Carly Shell had 8 in support.

Covington held a huge advantage on the boards, pulling down 54 total rebounds to just 32 for Dayton Christian. The Lady Buccs also had 23 offensive rebounds to just 8 for the Lady Warriors.

"Brooke (Gostomsky) had a big night on the boards," praised Maschino. "She led us with 14 rebounds and six of those were offensive."

Covington's defensive pressure resulted into 27 turnovers by Dayton Christina, while the Lady Buccs had 14 turnovers of their own.

In the end, Covington evens its record to 12-12 and moves on to face Tri-Village on Saturday at noon.

Its a rematch of December 19th matchup that Tri-Village won 39-34 at Covington.
