DECEMBER 12, 2013 - COVINGTON
With 2:00 left in the third quarter Covington coach Craig Maschino had seen enough. His Lady Buccs were down 31-23 against a gritty Mississinawa Valley team and not playing to the expectations of Lady Bucc basketball.

Whatever was said during the timeout obviously had an affect as Covington went on a 17-0 run that pushed made the score 40-31 in the Lady Buccs' favor with 4:34 left in the game.

From there, Covington closed out a huge win on the home floor, 48-40.

"Basically, we played well for ten minutes tonight," said Maschino in regards to his team's effort. "The rest of the time we didn't play to our level."

Still, Covington was able to hang close as it trailed by one at end of the first half, 20-19.

But Mississinawa Valley came out blazing hot to start the third quarter as Nicole Scholl canned a huge trey to spark an 11-4 run.

"Give them credit, they came into our gym and hit some big shots tonight," Maschino credited Mississinawa Valley. "Plus, they crashed the board very well."

After the Covington timeout, the defensive pressure picked up for the Lady Buccs as they went to a full court press.

And it was junior Heidi Cron that got Covington rolling with a steal and a layup.

"Cron sets the tone for us defensively," Maschino said. "She loves to play full court with her quickness. She got us going defensively and that carried us through the fourth quarter."

What also helped carry Covington was some big shots by Carly Shell. The sophomore canned two huge treys in the final frame.

"It's good to have her back," Maschino said of Shell, who was out with an injury earlier in the season.

Covington was 9 of 19 for 47% from two-point range, 6 of 26 from behind the arc for 23% and 12 of 23 for 51% from the free throw line.

Mississinawa Valley was 15 of 37 for 40% from two-point range, 1 of 8 from behind the arc and 7 of 13 from the charity stripe.

Both teams had 32 rebounds, while Covington held a 14-9 advantage with turnovers.

Cassidy Cain and Arianna Richards both scored 13 points, while Shell dropped in nine and Cron six.

Mississinawa Valley was led by a 13-point effort from Nicole Scholl.

The win boosts Covington's record to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in Cross County Conference play. The Lady Buccs host Tri-Village on Monday.

Mississinawa Valley drops to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the CCC. The Lady Blackhawks travel to Northwestern on Saturday.
