DECEMBER 23, 2013 - PLEASANT HILL
For just the second time in school history the Covington Lady Buccs walked off the floor on the losing end against rival Newton after dropping a 33-28 affair at Newton High School on Monday.

And it was failing to do the little things that cost the Lady Buccs, especially down the stretch.

"We were down by three and then gave up three straight offensive rebounds on the front end of one-and-ones," said Covington coach Craig Maschino. "It reminded me of the final minutes of the Tri-Village game where we did the same thing. You have to box out to give yourself a chance."

Covington had just received a huge trey by junior Cassidy Cain to cut the Newton lead to 31-28 with under 1:00 to go and called a timeout to set up the defensive strategy.

The Lady Buccs then stole the ball and had a wide open layup at the other end. Unfortunately, the layup attempt bounced off the glass and the edge of the rim and a trailing Newton defender pulled down the rebound.

Covington immediately fouled to kill the clock and sent the Newton shooter to the line, where the front end of the one-and-one was missed that set in motion the sequence of three straight offensive rebounds off of missed free throws by the Indians.

After the third offensive board, Newton was able to can two straight free throws to seal the deal.

"We didn't finish," Maschino said. "We've got to learn to do the little things like boxing out, taking care of the basketball, converting on baskets in transition."

Still, Covington had its chances earlier to put some cushion on the scoreboard, but didn't make the plays it needed to put the pressure on Newton.

Lead 12-8 midway through the second quarter, Covington failed to score over the remainder of the half as Newton cut the defect to 12-10.

Then, the Lady Buccs had several opportunities with wide open looks at the basket in the third frame, but couldn't convert from long range. The cold shooting by Covington was the spark Newton needed for a big third quarter.

"We talked all week about how Newton always comes out in the second half and puts together a strong third quarter," Maschino explained. "They outscored us by four points in the third quarter and that I think was the difference in the game."

Still, The Lady Buccs had their chances in the final frame, but failed to take advantage of opportunities that were presented by the struggling free throw shooting of Newton.

In all, Newton made just five of 13 free throws in the contest, many misses on the front end of one-and-ones.

But the 10 offensive rebounds pulled down by Newton gave it 10 extra opportunities at the basket.

Which, in the end was Covington's doom in a five-point loss.
