FEBRUARY 1, 2014 - COVINGTON
Losing is a part of athletics and everyone goes through it. But some losses hurt more than others and sticks in the crawl of competitors from a long time.

One of those losses that has been eating at the girls on the Covington basketball team came on December 23rd at neighboring rival Newton. In that five-point defeat, Covington only scored 28 points and to get to the free throw line just one time.

Fortunately for Covington, it didn't have to wait an entire year for redemption as the Lady Buccs hosted Newton on Saturday, just eight weeks removed from their most frustrating evening.

"This was a game the girls have looked forward too," said Covington coach Craig Maschino. "The first time we played them we weren't aggressive at either end of the floor. This time the plan was to take it to them."

And the result was a 57-42 win on a night the Lady Buccs recognized the lone senior, Morgan McReynolds.

"Big win," said Maschino. "We're coming together here late in the season and hopefully peaking at the right time."

Covington took control from the opening tip as it scored 26 points in the first quarter - just two points shy of the entire offensive output in the last meeting with Newton.

"The last time they jumped on us early and we never really recovered," Maschino explained. "This time we jump on them early and never let up."

And it was junior guard Heidi Cron who was the spark plug as she scored the first five points of the game on back-to-back steals for two layups and a free throw off a Newton foul.

"When we played them in December their point guard (Maddison Mollette) hurt us in that game," Maschino explained. "This time we put Heidi on her and she was in her face all day. Heidi set the tone early with a couple of steals for layups."

While Cron was making life difficult for Newton ball handlers, Cassidy Cain was torching the nets for 18 first half points for Covington.

"Cass got hot early," Maschino said of the Lady Buccs' leading scorer, who finished with 20 points on the night. "She hit some big three's and did a nice job of driving to the basket."

Covington pushed its lead to 51-27 at the end of the third quarter, but Newton made a run to cut the defect to 10 points midway through the fourth quarter.

"We knew they would make a run sometime and give Newton credit, they fought back and cut it to ten," said Maschino. "But our girls stayed composed and made plays down the stretch."

Covington shot 42% from the floor (18-43), 42% from the three-point line (5-12) and 73% from the charity stripe (16-22).

Newton shot 47% from the field (19-40), 50% from the free throw line (4-8) and failed to convert on its only three-point attempt.

Newton pulled won 25 rebounds to 23 for Covington, but the Lady Buccs recorded 11 offensive rebounds to 9 for Newton.

The biggest difference was Covington's ability to create turnovers as the Lady Buccs recorded 11 steals.

Cassidy Cain led Covington with a game-high 20 points, while Heidi Cron scored 10 points.

Newton was led by Trelissa Lavy's 15 points and a 12-point effort by Allison Wise.

Covington hosts Tri-County North on Monday, while Newton travels to Franklin Monroe on Monday.
