FEBRUARY 3, 2014 - COVINGTON
When shots aren't falling, the best way to get out of the shooting slump is to turn up the defensive pressure.

And that's what Covington did Tuesday night as it turned a 6-5 score at the end of the first period into a 62-32 route of Tri-County North.

"We got off to a slow start offensively," said Covington coach Craig Maschino. "We had to turn up the intensity at the defensive end, which got us going offensively. We started knocking down open looks in the second quarter."

This led to a 27-4 run by the Lady Buccs to break open a close game into a 33-9 lead at the break.

Covington kept the pressure on in the third quarter, outscoring Tri-County North 15-3 in the frame to boost the margin to 48-12 with one quarter to play.

"Our defensive pressure have us opportunities in transition. Our defensive effort was what we expect in both the second and third quarters," Maschino explained. "The dribble drive was there in the second half and we made some great passes for wide open finishes in the paint."

With the game well in hand, Covington emptied its bench in the fourth quarter.

Tri-County North made a nice run of its own in the final frame, but the Lady Buccs already had the game well in hand.

"We are really starting to fire on all cylinders and play at the level we expect of ourselves," said Maschino. "We've won 8 of our last 10. Offensively we are playing well and scoring points. Everyone is contributing which makes us tough to defend."

Covington shot 41% from the floor (24-59), 29% from behind the arc (7-24) and 47% from the free throw line (7-15), while Tri-County North was 13 of 52 from the field (25%0, 1 of 13 from threes (8%), and 5 of 10 from the line (50%).

Covington pulled down 40 rebounds to 30 for Tri-County North and had a 20-14 advantage at the offensive end. The Lady Buccs also won the turnover battle 19-10.

Covington looks to keep its late-season momentum rolling at Arcanum on Thursday.
