JANUARY 23, 2014 - COVINGTON
Covington has dropped five games this season by five points or less and the Lady Buccs weren't about to let another game slip away in a back-and-forth slugfest with National Trail on Thursday.

"We've had some close losses and it's tough to deal with at times, especially when you know you should have won," said Covington coach Craig Maschino. "But at the same time, our girls don't quit and that keeps you in games."

It wasn't a perfect performance as Covington struggled shooting the basketball to the tune of a 28% shooting night (15 of 53), but the effort the Lady Buccs gave for four quarters gave them a chance at the end.

Trailing 39-38 with under 30 seconds left, sophomore Arianna Richards atoned for a defensive lapse by canning a huge trey to give Covington a 41-39 lead.

"We were up by one and Arianna made a mistake at the defensive end that led to a score for them that gave them the lead," Maschino explained. "I called a timeout and she came to the bench apologizing for the mistake and said she wanted to make up for it. And she sure did with that shot."

Still, National Trail had enough time to set up the offense for a potential game-tying or game-winning shot - depending on what spot on the floor it wanted to attack.

National Trail's 6-1 post player Kate Deaton had killed Covington all night inside the paint and outside the Lady Blazers had dangerous weapons in Miranda Mize and Payten Laird.

"During the timeout I told Brooke (Gostomskey) that I didn't want number 45 (Deaton) to get the ball, even it it meant fouling her," Maschino said. "And we had Heidi (Cron) mirror number 20 (Miranda Mize) so she wouldn't touch the ball either. We weren't going to let either of those two beat us."

The strategy worked as National Trail's Andrea Hunt launched a shot 15 feet away from the basket that bounced off the rim. Covington's Cassidy Cain got a hand on it and tipped it toward center court, where Heidi Cron outhustled a Blazer player to slap the ball into the hands of Arianna Richards as time expired.

Which preserved the 41-39 win for Covington.

"Heidi (Cron) is something," Machino praised. "She always seems to find a way to make a play. She was defending on one end of the court and hustled to the other end to slap the ball away from Trial. If she didn't hustle, there was enough time for them to get off a desperation shot off."

Cron wasn't the only player in a Covington uniform to hustle tonight as it took a complete team effort to come away with a win over a very determined National Trail team.

"Cass (Cassidy) Cain had a big night," Maschino said. "She had an off night last night against Milton and she came back tonight and played very well."

And Cain led all players with a game-high 16 points, while Richards dropped in 11 and Carly Shell scored 8.

But it wasn't easy as Kate Deaton made life difficult for Covington with her size and length inside the paint. In all, Covington made just six of 26 shots inside Deaton territory.

"The plan was to be physical with her (Deaton), but a lot of times it didn't matter what we did against her," said Maschino. "We'd get position on her under the boards and a lot of times it didn't matter."

Despite Deaton's presence inside the paint, Covington was able to hold its own on the boards with 32 rebounds to 36 for National Trail. The Lady Buccs also had 13 offensive rebounds to 10 for the Lady Blazers.

But what hurt both teams in the contest was the inability to convert at the free throw line. Covington, which came into the game shooting 65% on the season, only converted on 2 of 11 free throws. National Trail wasn't much better as it only converted on 4 of 13.

"If we make our free throws this was a different game," Maschino said. "Normally we are a pretty decent free throws shooting team, but we didn't help ourselves at the free throw line tonight."

Where Covington did help itself is in effort - the type of effort that allowed it to overcome its shortcomings shooting the basketball.

And the Lady Buccs helped themselves to a 41-39 win that pushes their record to 7-9 overall and 5-4 in the CCC.
