DECEMBER 16, 2013 - COVINGTON
Late in the fourth quarter Covington trailed Tri-Village 34-31 and had a chance to cut into the lead at the free throw line.

Unfortunately, from there the Lady Buccs' youth and inexperience came to the forefront as Covington missed on the front end of a one-and-one and then fouled Tri-Village on the rebound.

The Lady Patriots made the first free throw and missed the second one, but Tri-Village's Heather Ferris pulled down the offensive rebound. Seconds later Covington fouled again and after a missed Patriot free throw, Ferris pulled down yet another offensive rebound - this time resulting into a bucket to push the Tri-Village lead to 37-31.

After a Covington turnover on the ensuing possession, the Lady Buccs once again sent a Patriot shooter to the free throw line and for the third consecutive possession Ferris pulled down an offensive rebound after a missed free throw.

"We gave up three offensive rebounds on three straight missed free throws and they capitalized on it," said Covington coach Craig machine. "We were right with them , down by three and then made some mental mistakes that cost us. Our inexperience showed down the stretch."

After the third consecutive offensive rebound by Ferris, the Lady Patriots followed by converting on two straight free throws to push the lead to 39-31 with just 12 seconds left in the game.

Covington's Cassidy Cain canned a trey with two seconds left and Tri-Village let the clock run out to preserve the 39-34 win.

"We missed some free throws of our own down the stretch on the front end of one-and-ones," said Maschino. "If we make a couple of those free throws and don't give up the offensive rebounds, we had a really good chance of beating one of the top teams in our conference tonight."

Covington had the strategy to beat Tri-Village and the Lady Buccs executed the strategy very well until the fateful final minutes.

"The game plan was to control the tempo and hold them under forty points," Maschino explained. "We did what we wanted defensively and held them under forty and we felt that would give us a great chance to win."

And Covington had its chances to win the game as the largest lead Tri-Village could muster in the first three quarters was an 11-6 lead at the end of the first.

Covington cut the deficit to 23-19 at the break and opened the second half by tying the score at 23-23 before Tri-Village reclaimed a 30-27 lead at the end of the third.

Tri-Village pushed the lead to 34-29 before a big bucket by Morgan McReynolds gave Covington some momentum with under 2:00 left in the contest.

Which is when the youth and inexperience of a young Covington showed in yet another close defeat.

"We've lost a few close ball games where our youth and inexperience has cost us," said Maschino. "But the good thing is our girls will continue to get better. We'll learn from some of these mistakes and hopefully later in the season we will be able to pull out these close games."

For now, Covington drops to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the CCC, while Tri-Village improves to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCC.

The Lady Buccs travel to Newton next Monday, while Tri-Village takes part in the Graham Holiday Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
