FEBRAURY 3, 2012 - COVINGTON
One basket. One play. That was the difference between winning and losing in Friday's Cross County Conference matchup between the Covington Buccaneers and the Franklin Monroe Jets.

And it was Franklin Monroe who made that one play to stun Covington on its home floor, 36-35.

"This is a tough one to swallow," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "We were up with forty seconds to go and had the ball. But we couldn't make the play to put them away and that's disappointing."

Leading 35-34, Covington worked for an open shot to seal the game, but was called for a foul away from the ball for an illegal screen.

Franklin Monroe then took advantage of its new life as Travis Fietshans scored off of an offensive rebound with 14 seconds left to reclaim the lead.

Covington then had two shot opportunities in the final seconds, but couldn't get either attempt to fall and Franklin Monroe pulled down its last of 28 rebounds to reclaim possession with 4 seconds left in the game.

The Buccs were forced to foul to extend the game as long as possible and Franklin Monroe misfired on it's one-and-one attempt at the other end. Covington pulled down the rebound with 1.8 seconds left, but a desperation heave down the floor was intercepted by Trey Mong as the buzzer sounded.

"We had our chances," Craft said. "Give them credit though. They played good zone defense and they were aggressive on the boards. They killed us on their offensive glass."

Which is uncharacteristic of Covington as Franklin Monroe out rebounded the Buccs 13-5 on the offensive glass and 28-24 overall.

"We knew they were aggressive on the boards and we reminded the kids of that before the game," Craft continued. "That was probably the difference in the game."

Rebounding and failing to get to the free throw line as the Buccs only attempted five free throws in the game - something that baffled Craft due to the fact that Covington was successful getting the ball inside to its big man, Cole Owens.

"We were patient with the basketball and did a nice job of attacking their zone," Craft explained. "We were able to get the ball inside to Cole and he went hard to the basket, but we just couldn't get to the free throw line."

Owens ended up with 13 points and made fifty percent of his shots in heavy traffic. Ryan Craft was also effective with 12 points on the night.

Unfortunately for Covington, it only received 10 points from the remaining of the roster.

"The bottom line is we didn't score enough points to win," Craft said. "Both teams only scored four points in the fourth quarter, so this game was there for the taking."

The game was tight throughout as the two teams were knotted at 21-21 at the break.

Franklin Monroe opened the third quarter with a seven-point run on two-treys and a short jumper by Travis Fietshans, but Covington battled back with a trey by Ryan Craft, a runner by Cole Owens and another bucket by Craft to cut the deficit to 32-31 with one quarter to play.

Unfortunately Covington could only muster two buckets in the fourth quarter as Franklin Monroe held on for the win.

Covington converted on 15 of 37 shots on the night and just 3 of 11 from behind the arc.

Franklin Monroe was 12 of 42 from the floor and 6 of 17 from three-point range.

Both teams committed ten turnovers on the night and Franklin Monroe was 6 for 8 from the free throw line, while Covington made just 2 of 5.

It all led to a 36-35 loss for the Buccs, who drop to 8-8 on the season.
