Tough Ending To Season...
A look of disgust and the blood running down Jordy Meyer's face told the entire story in a frustrating evening for the Covington Buccaneers.

Shot opportunities for Buccaneer leading scorer Eric Beckstedt were few and far between.

MARCH 4, 2009 - PIQUA
Things couldn't have went any worse for the Covington Buccaneers in the first half of second round tournament action at Piqua High School on Wednesday.

The Buccs had just two points on the scoreboard with 2:45 left in the first half and ended up trailing 22-7 at the break. Despite rallying for 27 second half points the Buccs bowed out of the tournament with a 47-34 defeat to Fort Loramie.

"We just couldn't get going," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "We missed a lot of easy shots from point blank range."

Which may have led to the team pressing too much.

"When you miss easy shots the pressure intensifies," Craft continued. "Defensively, they're as good as anyone we've played all year and we didn't handle their pressure."

And shot opportunities in the first half were limited due to Covington's inability to handle the pressure. The Buccs had nine turnovers at the break.

"We only took ten shots in the first half," Craft explained. "A lot of that was due to us turning the ball over and not getting into our offense."

Still, Covington continued to battle in the second half and cut the margin to ten and had several opportunities to close the gap to within single digits in the third quarter.

"We were down by ten and had two chances at lay-ups," said Craft. "Instead of cutting it to six or eight, we miss the lay-up or the ball slips out of our hand and they get a lay-up at the other end."

The Buccs outscored Loramie 13-10 in the third and still felt confident heading into the fourth quarter trailing 32-20.

"We never felt like we were out of it," said Craft. "The kids kept playing hard and we would have some runs where we'd get within ten. We had our chances, but didn't take advantage of them."

Covington also couldn't get Eric Beckstedt going. The team's leading scorer managed five shot attempts in the game and scored all 6 of his points on two second half treys.

"They (Fort Loramie) did a good job of switching and helping off the screens," described Craft as to how the Redskins held Beckstedt in check. "But that's when we needed to take it hard to the basket and make them pay."

Adam Craft led the Buccs with a game-high 12 points and pulled down six rebounds, while Ben Christian had a game-high 8 rebounds.

Covington shot 39% from the floor, making 12 of 31 shots. It only connected on 2-of-7 from behind the arc for 29% and 8-of-14 from the free throw line (57%).

The Buccs also committed 14 turnovers, and were outscored in bench points 23-1.

Fort Loramie shot 44% from the field on a 16-for-36 effort and made 4-of-9 from behind the arc (44%). The Redskins shot 21 free throws on the evening and made 11 for 52%.

Loramie held a slim advantage on the boards 25-23 and only committed 9 turnovers.

It all ads up to Covington ending the season with a 9-13 record.

"It's tough," Craft closed. "I feel for the kids because they put so much into this. It's a tough way for the season to end."
