FEBRUARY 2, 2012 - ARCANUM
The Covington Lady Buccs jumped all over Arcanum early and cruised to an impressive 45-31 win to improve to 9-8 overall and 7-3 in the CCC.
And it was the hot shooting of Julianna Simon from the outside and the dominance of Shelby Kihm on the inside that got Covington rolling to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The dynamic duo ended up combining for 32 points on the night as Simon led all players on the floor with 21 points and Kihm tallied 11 hard-earned points.
The Lady Buccs outscored the Trojans 11-9 to extend the lead to 25-9 at the break and then put the game away in the third quarter by scoring 13 more points for a 38-15 lead.
With victory virtually sealed, the Lady Buccs then used the fourth quarter to give some of the younger players some varsity action and the experience was valuable although Arcanum managed to put 16 more points on the board.
In all, it was an outstanding defensive effort by Covington as it made it difficult for Arcanum to get off any uncontested shots throughout much of the contest.
Covington also received some balanced scoring, something that has been lacking in recent outings. Heidi Snipes had a stellar night offensive night with 8 points, while Caitlyn Crawford contributed with 4 points.
The Lady Buccs look to keep the momentum going from a solid win on Saturday at New Bremen.
